Some time this morning my wife’s laptop hard drive bit the dust. It crashed for good with no warning, just making a clicking sound when we powered the computer. I booted into Knoppix, and when it did detect a hard drive at all it said “can’t find superblock.” I even put the drive in the freezer for a while to try to bring it back long enough to recover some data, with no success. The drive was only two years old.
The worst part is that we lost some photos, particularly from the last couple of weeks of the baby with his grandparents. Actually, I’m thankful it happened at two weeks and not, say, six or eight. With a new hard drive in the mail and a study today that says computer components are getting more reliable, hopefully we’ve learned our lesson, and we’ll get religious about backups.

Ouch–sorry to hear about the harddrive, esp. the photos. I think I’ll go home right now and make some backups…
Funny, you must be my future self- my wife’s laptop hard drive bit the dust. It crashed for good, just making a clicking sound when we powered the computer up. The hard drive? An IBM Travelstar. JOY OF JOYS. It’s in the freezer now, but thanks to your blog post I know we’re probably screwed. FUN TIMES.
