Do you get any mails from that WordPress blog, such as comment notification emails?
Are you using any email-related plugins, such as one of those that send email via SMTP?
That message is saying that the backup plugin has handed off the backup to WordPress's email handler, and the handler has said that the email failed to send.
It is a closed blog so I do not get comments. Is there a way to test to see if it will send a email out?
I am not using any SMTP plugins.
I think what you are telling me that this is a WP problem. If you can tell me how to test it I will move this over to that forum
Jeff
If you can, check your server's error logs to see if there are any error messages. If you don't see anything there, I'd have your host check to make sure that PHP mail functionality is working.
2 of my blogs have been doing backups and emailing them to me perfectly, one stopped sending emails automatically several months ago (already corresponded on this - I haven't had time to set things up so you can get into my site).
I have been able to manually backup and email the backup to myself though, BUT in the last few days I am getting exactly the same error as described here.
It is only on one blog though. I wonder if it is a conflict with another plugin that is causing it?
I stopped getting email automated backups since 11 August 2009. All was fine before that. Instead now the backup has started getting stored on the server space by default. wp-cron is consuming lots of memory on my server since then. No email backup is coming, but I do not get any errors also.
I am having the same issue. The plugin also seemingly resets to default save to server each time I look at the settings page. In addition, I had it set to backup daily and it reverts to weekly.
I do get emails, and I do get 'backup now' via emails.
After 3 months I have finally discovered the answer to my problem: I installed the WP-Mail-SMTP plugin and configured per the instructions on the plug-in home page for goog smtp server and - voila! backup mail once again works.
I am using this plugin on other domains on the same server and it is working fine, on this one domain I am getting this error:
<The following errors were reported: ERROR: The mail application has failed to deliver the backup.>
I am using WP 2.8.4 and WordPress Database Backup 2.2.2
where do I start?

Well, you could leave a test comment from a fake user. Or you could create a new user and have WordPress email the password to that user's account.
I did the test as you suggested and no mail is coming through, do you have any ideas?

I know that the PHP mail functionality is working on the host as I have another WP blog on the same IP & host and it is working just fine

I am having the same issue - not sure at what point it started, but I get the "mail application failed to deliver" message when I try a manual backup.
I am able to receive other emails from my blog. I tried changing the timeout factor (mentioned elsewhere) on the cron.php, to no avail.
I would be happy to allow you to access my site to see the outcome if you'd like.
Thanks!

For the first time in several months the automated backup emailed me today from one of my blogs, however the attachment was empty.
When I tried to make a backup online and email it, the email also failed.
