143 KB isn't that tiny for a compressed MySQL backup, which is basically just a bunch of text. I'd say 143 KB is about right for a typical blog.
You can verify that it works by using an appropriate gzip extractor (note: not just any zip tool will work; anything installed already on Windows for example will likely fail mid-way. See gzip.org for free, legit gzip extraction tools).
Then open the uncompressed file in a text editor such as Notepad.
I think it worked. When I used the plugin to backup my WP site the downloaded file increased to 155 KB. I had added some photos to my blog since my last blog.
Then I used the gzip program to decompress the gz file. The file increased its size to 1.10 MB. When I opened I saw a whole bunch of text which I don't understand but I managed to see bits of pieces of my website.
Thanks alot. I think this post will help other novices like me who have followed the directions to backup their WP site but were not sure if it worked.
Is it just as easy to upload your backed up content as well?
A bit similar to this poster, I am relatively new to blogging/Wordpress, and not very competent besides... so I have a few very basic questions about this plug in.
As my host doesn't offer a back up service (despite being the one most highly recommended by Wordpress!) I am using your plug in to back up my site weekly to my email... everything seems in order, but I don't truly understand what is being backed up and how.
I emailed my IT friend the .gz file and he said "Yeah this is just an sql backup without any files. But you shouldn't have any problems backing up from it."
Which might be reassuring if I knew what he meant - the bit about 'without any files' is definitely worrying. Obviously when you are investing a lot of your time into a project you want to be 100% sure nothing can go wrong as you don't want to lose months/years of your life! In short, is every part of my website absolutely backed up by this plug-in? Photos, texts, layouts, links?
If something went wrong would this tiny file be all I need to restore EVERYTHING. What would I do just send it to my web hoster, and my site would reappear as it was when it was last backed up?
Sorry for such simple/inane questions, but I'm a bit behind on tech stuff and don't want to take any risks with these issues.
As it is, I'm thinking of scrapping the money I paid Blue Host and moving to a host that performs regular back ups! But if this plug in is every bit as good as back ups a web host provides then it doesn't make sense to go through that expense.
Ok good to know! Thanks Austin. So if I backed up using this plug in, I would have to re-insert all images to all posts?
Any sage advice on backing up the remainder? Is there a plug-in which complements yours, that you know of? Or am I on the wrong track?
help deeply appreciated

ps if you like Aristotle, and don't hate fantasy, you might like this novel where the philosopher pops up as a kind of magician-type character... anyway it's a decent read
I just found this plug in recently I thought it would be a good thing to have. I have a simple question, how do I know that the backup was successful?
I don't get any error messages but the file is extremely tiny. It is only 143 KB. Is this correct?
As you can tell I am completely new to Wordpress. Your insight will be invaluable.
Thanks

The database holds just posts, pages, links, comments, settings, and a few other things.
Outside of the database (and the domain of this plugin) are images, theme and plugin files.
