I know of no way to create password-protected zip files using PHP (as opposed to making a system call, which most hosts of those who use this plugin don't allow PHP to do).

If there's a way to do so and someone can point me to it, I would be happy to implement this feature.

Hi! the plugin worked out-of-the-box, today, for my 2.9.2 WP installation! great!

this is a feature request:
would it be possible to provide a password for the zipped database export? You say one should not keep it on the server, ok, but what if the email itself is cracked?
As one can difficultly control the encoding (like AES, etc.) of mails send by php, I think it would be a good idea to password-protect the archive.

greetings from Vienna!

Hi,

Thanks for the fast reply.

I tried everything. In mysql I tried to upload the backup as utf8, latin and more or less all the rest.

I tried to change the mysql connection collation to latin, utf, whatever.

Did the same with charset.

Tried to use iconv to convert the backup online.

The settings in Wordpress positively did not change. But just to exclude it, I tried changing the wp-config.php.

The problem is not the Danish charecters, but the Chinese ones in all the posts. They are turned into ???? and no matter what I change whatever setting to I now can not publish them either.

My guess is that one of either the WordPress or MySQL character encodings were different prior to restoring the database.

Try changing the various character encodings, such as changing WordPress's to utf8_danish_ci.

Also, there are also tools that let you convert one encoding to another, such as iconv. You could using such a tool on a copy of the database backup.

I have a Danish blog, where I often also write in Chinese.

Until recently that was not a problem. However, I had to use a backup of the database, and now all the Chinese characters – in all three years of my articles – are converted into questionmarks.

Plus, now I can’t publish Chinese characters either. I can write them, but once they are published, there’s just a line of ?????.

As far as I can tell, none of the settings in Wordpress, MySql or Mars Edit have changed.

In Mars Edit the encoding is set to UTF-8 (which I need for special Danish characters æ, ø and å).

In the Wordpress dashboard it is also set to UTF-8.

And in Php Admin MySql it is utf8_danish_ci.

What to do? I really hope there’s help out there.

Don’t touch anything to your backup file !

The plugin doesn’t force any charset and uses the MySQL defaut one: latin1. So, in phpMyadmin, import your backup by selecting the latin1 charset.
This has nothing to do with blog entries charset in UTF-8, or other Tables settings.

Thank you, filosofo. I checked the sql file in the built-in WinRAR viewer, and there seem to be some umlauts, but mainly they have been changed to something like this: Jürgen (I hope this displays right, as a combination of a wrong umlaut and a one-quarter sign.) Clearly, that's not what I'm looking for, but it looks like it retained slightly more info than the question marks I get on the site.

I'm not sure how to indicate encoding for each table.

Thanks again for your help.

Open the backed-up sql file in a text editor, and look to see if the umlauts et al. are in there (you can do this by searching for part of a phrase that you know precedes an umlaut in one of your posts).

Also, the character encoding should be indicated for each table.

I had to restore my database after a failed attempt at upgrading (a plugin I need hasn't upgraded yet.)

But now all umlauts and special characters in my blog are missing.

I assume this has something to do with the character encoding. When I imported the backup file into phpMyAdmin, I was asked for "Character set of the file." I used UTF. I assume this was wrong, but I don't just want to try again because I started replacing some of the characters by hand.

Did something go wrong with the original backup, or can I get all my special characters back by chosing the proper character set?

Thank you for your help.
